Samuel A. Bierfield, who passed away on August 15, 1868, is historically noted as possibly the first Jewish individual to be a victim of lynching in the United States. He, along with his African-American employee, Lawrence Bowman, were attacked and fatally shot in Bierfield's store in Franklin, Tennessee, on that date by a group of disguised assailants. It's suspected that these attackers were members of the local KKK chapter, an organization that had gained significant presence in Tennessee since 1866. This tragic event was covered by major newspapers of the time, including The New York Times and the Nashville Union and Dispatch.
Regrettably, as was common in such tragic events, the perpetrators were never brought to justice. Although one suspect was apprehended for Bierfield's murder, he was subsequently released when seven witnesses testified in his favor. This lynching was a part of a larger pattern of escalating political and racial violence in the area, notably the July 1867 Franklin Riot. During this riot, black members of the Union League were targeted, resulting in injuries to 25-30 individuals and the death of three black individuals and one white Conservative.
